Legacy Systems & Technical Debt
Simplified and modernized a decades-old technology environment: 54 databases became 11, multiple internal tools became one, and a single dashboard replaced scattered monitoring. Systems now detect their own failures and, in many cases, fix themselves.
The Challenge
After more than 50 years in business, the organization had accumulated a complex landscape of legacy applications, internal tools, and supporting databases. As business needs evolved, systems were customized and new tools were introduced, while older systems stayed in place
The result was an environment that was difficult to maintain, had no centralized view of operations, and required significant developer involvement to support. The legacy e-commerce platform also carried a heavy maintenance burden and payment-compliance overhead.
Consolidating Tools & Data
Customer information was spread across separate internal applications, so employees needed different tools to look up customer and order details. This also led to redundant databases and a growing maintenance burden.
I led the consolidation of multiple internal customer applications into a single customer lookup application, retired unused databases, and merged duplicated data, simplifying the landscape and reducing the effort to maintain it.
Modernizing E-commerce & Reducing Risk
The legacy e-commerce platform had been extensively customized over the years, making it difficult to maintain and keep current. I migrated the business to Shopify and established guidelines to protect the integrity of the theme and avoid customizations that complicate upgrades. The theme is connected to GitHub for source control, and I selected one with regular vendor updates so the storefront stays current without heavy custom maintenance.
I also migrated business-to-business purchasing and the legacy payment process to Shopify B2B, moving payment handling onto a PCI-compliant platform and reducing the organization’s compliance burden.
Improving Operational Visibility
I built a centralized dashboard accessible across the organization, bringing application health, errors, job status, integrations, documentation, standard operating procedures, and known issues into one place. Applications now detect known failures and self-heal. When a person is needed, a ticket is created and assigned to the right developer.
The Results
- 54 databases → 11. Retirement and consolidation reduced the database footprint and the effort to maintain, monitor, and secure it.
- 5 developers → 2. The environment now needs two developers instead of five, freeing the team for new features and genuine defects.
- Many tools → one. Employees look up customer information in a single application.
- Storefronts that stay current. Shopify with a version-controlled theme and a clear update strategy keeps the site up to date without heavy custom maintenance.
- Payment handling simplified. Payment processing moved to a PCI-compliant platform, reducing the compliance burden.
- One view of operations. A single dashboard shows application health, errors, jobs, and integrations, and many failures now fix themselves.
